Preparing a Pygora Fleece to Show

Some of us live to far away to show our goats at a PBA sanctioned show. Preparing, shipping and showing your fleeces is a great way to take part in a show that is miles away. You asked, well some of you did, so here is how I prepared a fleece to be shown in a PBA sanctioned fleece show. FYI - This will be my first official show to be in, so keep in mind I may not know what is exactly right or exactly wrong. Click on the photo below to read the caption. (Showing a buck fleece below.)

Preparing a Buck fleece for show

Showing a buck fleece is a bit less time consuming than showing an entire fleece, as you only need a 1oz fleece sample from the barrel of the stinky beast.
Picture
A full side view of the buck at the time of shearing is required when showing a one oz sample. This gives the judge a good idea of the coverage and lock structure over the entire body of the buck.
Picture
Check for a good place on the barrel of the buck to take your fleece sample from.
Picture
Take a sample of fleece from the buck's side. This might be a bit more than one ounce, but I'd rather have a bit more than needed, rather than not enough.
Picture
Place the buck's fleece sample in a gallon baggie. Make sure you put his name and shear date on the baggie.
Picture
For bucks 2 years or older, fleece will be represented by a one ounce sample taken from the buck’s barrel and placed in a zip-lock bag with the registration ID# and date of harvest written on it. A colored, side view picture of the buck in full fleece must accompany the fleece sample, and the buck fleece weight must indicate the total fleece, NOT the sample sent. .
